How SDN and NFV Extend the Adoption and Capabilities of Self-organising Networks (SON)

The infrastructure that communication service providers (CSPs) had in place when networks ran on 2G is still sufficient and used today. Since then, IP-only, 3G and 4G have been released, and 5G is now in the running to replace older solutions. CSPs are now figuring out how to improve telecommunication network performance services and are also beginning to implement self-organising networks (SON).

Previously relying on human intervention, SON telecom solutions can now automate certain operations. Implementing these solutions in radio access network (RAN) is straightwards, but CSPs need to consider the core and backhaul networks for maximum optmisation.

This is where things become more complex.
